Precalculus Course Overview

This class is approved by the NCAA.

This class is part of the MyFunScience live online homeschool classes, which provide structured instruction for middle school and high school students. Families can explore all of our homeschool math courses.

This live online Precalculus class serves as a key bridge between algebra and calculus. The course focuses on developing a deep understanding of functions and their properties so students are prepared not only to succeed in calculus, but to truly understand it.

Students meet live once per week for interactive instruction and discussion. The remainder of the learning takes place through thoughtfully designed asynchronous activities that allow students to practice, reflect, and revisit ideas at their own pace.

A strong emphasis is placed on conceptual understanding. Students learn not only what to do and how to do it, but also why mathematical ideas work. Rather than memorizing isolated procedures, students learn to explain their reasoning and develop deeper mathematical insight.

Throughout the course, students explore functions through multiple representations—symbols, graphs, tables, words, and models—and learn how these representations connect to one another.

Course Overview

  • High School Credit: 1 credit
  • Recommended Grade Level: Grades 10–12
  • Format: Weekly live online precalculus class
  • Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra 2

Skills Students Will Develop

In addition to mathematical content, the course intentionally develops important academic skills such as:

  • Clear mathematical communication (spoken and written)
  • Critical thinking and problem solving
  • Reflection and revision of work
  • Making connections between mathematical concepts
  • Collaborative thinking and discussion
  • Developing a growth mindset toward learning mathematics

By the end of the course, students will have a strong and flexible precalculus foundation that supports confidence, independence, and readiness for calculus and other advanced mathematics courses.

Required Materials

  • MathXL
  • Desmos
  • TI-83+ or higher graphing calculator

  • Screen recording tools for explaining mathematical reasoning (built-in tools on Windows or macOS are sufficient; Loom or similar tools may also be used)

Course Topics

  • Polynomial and Rational Functions
  • Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
  • Trigonometric and Polar Functions
  • Analytic Geometry (Conic Sections, Parametric Equations, Vectors)
  • Sequences, Series, and Combinatorics
