German 3 Course Description

German 3 uses the 3rd level book in the Deutsch Aktuell series, 7th edition. Students learn more difficult grammatical structures and read about historical figures, German-speaking regions, and significant events. Cultural differences are discussed in greater detail. Emphasis is on spoken language. This course will enrich your vocabulary and teach complex sentence formulation, simple past tense, past perfect tense, adverbs, accusative, dative, and genitive cases, coordinating conjunctions, prepositions, and imperative.

The weekly live class sessions focus on introducing new grammar and practicing conversational skills. Live classes will feature famous German-speaking composers and their works.

Homework will reinforce the grammar introduced each week. Each week, students will also be asked to listen to or watch German TV or Radio, which are streamed live.

Throughout the year, students will also learn about German traditions and history. German 3 students will study short passages and poetry in German for reading comprehension.

Grade Levels

  • 10th – 12 grade

Prerequisites

Before taking this class, students should have completed German 2.

This is a high school-level course. Students are expected to read and comprehend at a high school level, study independently, and keep up with course assignments. They must take the initiative to study the syllabus, remain aware of course deadlines, be prepared for live class sessions, and ask for help when help is needed. Students should plan to spend forty-five minutes to one hour each weekday studying and completing homework.

The concepts we study will often be compared to and measured against the Biblical worldview. Therefore, examples in the lectures, some of the assigned readings, or portions of the examinations will ask students to approach the course material through the lens of one who shares this worldview.

Testimonials

Hi, Mrs. Cruz, unlike the thousands of other emails I’ve written, this one contains no desperate pleas for help. I want to say thank you for the three years of German that you’ve taught me. I’ve learned so much over all this time, and my German skills have improved greatly. Thank you so much for all the time you’ve invested in me, and all the emails from me that you’ve helpfully answered. I have found a love for German that has far surpassed any other languages I’ve studied. Thank you again for so much you’ve taught me!
