Writing ER Course Overview

This class is approved by the NCAA.

This class is part of the MyFunScience live online homeschool classes, which provide structured instruction for middle school and high school students. Families can explore all of our homeschool language arts courses.

This high school homeschool writing and grammar course helps older students fill in grammar gaps and gain confidence in composing a wide variety of academic writing forms. The course begins by strengthening paragraph writing skills and gradually builds toward clear, well-organized high school essays.

Students progress through expository, descriptive, persuasive, and literary analysis essays, while also completing biographical reports, summaries, observation reports, research writing, and practical business writing such as letters. Personal writing—including journals and autobiographical narrative—encourages students to develop their voice and express ideas clearly.

A key part of the course involves carefully analyzing and editing passages, in a workbook, that contain mechanical and grammatical errors, strengthening students’ understanding of grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure while sharpening their editing skills.

This comprehensive homeschool writing curriculum for high school students provides the intense yet necessary practice needed to build strong grammar, paragraph structure, and academic writing skills, preparing students for advanced composition, literature courses, and college-preparatory writing.

Testimonials

"At the time I thought the course was very challenging, but in hindsight the structure and expectations prepared me exceptionally well for college writing. I have earned A’s on all of my papers, and I now recognize how strong my preparation was."
Grace
"Sarah’s English professor, who also directs the college Writing Center, encouraged her to enroll in his advanced writing course after reviewing her research paper. The preparation she received here positioned her for advanced collegiate-level writing opportunities."
Martha
"I loved how poetic descriptions made me think about how word choice shapes meaning. Literature feels richer and more powerful now."
Student
"The most valuable skill I gained is the ability to analyze literature and look past the story to find hidden meaning. Many stories have underlying messages, and I find it fascinating to uncover them."
Student
"The most valuable piece of knowledge I will take away from this course is how to critique and appreciate literature. As I read more books, I noticed certain types of characters I enjoy, characters I don’t enjoy, and certain techniques that shape meaning. It’s important to me to understand literature more deeply and to develop my own informed opinions."
